Eight 1Ls join the SLS following a hotly contested election
Every September, the Students’ Law Society (SLS) runs their Fall General Election to recruit primarily 1L students. This year, there were eight positions available: four 1L Social and Finance Year Representatives (1L SFC Reps) and four 1L Student Life and Academic Year Representatives (1L SLAC Reps). There were no upper-year positions left vacant from the Spring General Election.
As in previous years, more individuals ran than there were positions available. This led to a hotly contested election. The results were announced via email on Friday, September 17 by SLS Chief Returning Officer Jonathan Hou (3L).
The Social and Finance Committee primarily coordinates SLS fees and finances, plans large and small events for students, and organizes club funding and club fair events. Four 1Ls are joining the SFC: Diego Jiminez Juri, Genevieve Simmons, Milana Grahovac, and Donya Ashnaei. Their platforms largely focus on increasing transparency within the SLS, holding networking functions, and organizing more meaningful and inclusive social events.
The Student Life and Academic Year Committee speaks on behalf of students to the Faculty, with elected members sitting on Faculty Council and assisting with policy development. Four 1Ls are joining the SLAC: Amy Kwong, Julia Campbell, Ben Kitching, and Justin Kim. The majority of those elected had prior experience in student government and advocacy.
Congratulations to the candidates elected and all those who ran. The next SLS election will take place in Spring 2022.
